Tried it in the 35W yesterday with Unique.
5 shot groups
Dacron filler to position powder
Seated long to engage rifling
Gas checked, sized to .360 dia.
Two grooves filled
13-15-16-17-18 grains at 50 yards.
15 was under 2" and 16 was 1.64" C-C.
One spot in the barrel with a few flakes of lead, easy cleaning.

Rem 700 1:16 twist (which throws 358009 all over the paper at this range)

It's a start.

Today's five 5-shot groups were with 4227.

25-26-27-28-29 grains at 50 yards.
Dacron filler to position powder
Seated long to engage rifling
Gas checked, sized to .360 dia.
Two grooves filled
All groups were smaller, grew smaller as charge increased.
28gr was 1.73"
29gr was 1.14"
Two rounds in each of the above two groups crowded together in the same hole; in both cases the first and second rounds (so close that I'd thought I'd thrown them off the paper just looking though the scope).

Looks like some potential here and a little heavier.

25 round batches are easy to load and sort out to different loadings.

.............Ah yes, a bit slower powder, and a bit fuller case. Crimp, no crimp? What was the alloy, any idea?

...............Buckshot

trk,

I am reading this with jealously because I had to sell a 210 grain mold because I could no longer reach the lands with the bullet in the case.

Alloy - Mystery alloy #6. About 2/3 WW and 1/3 sheet lead (some antimony).

Another bout today: five more 5-shot groups with 4227 at 50 yards.
As with the others (not mentioned) crimped securely into top lube groove.
Dacron filler to position powder
Seated long to engage rifling
Gas checked, sized to .360 dia.
Two grooves filled

28.0 - 1.34" with one flyer
28.5 - 1.000
29.0 - 3.64" straight line from upper left to lower right
29.5 - 2.25" straight line from upper right to lower left (but a little wider)
30.0 - 1.05"

Groups tended to rise a little each time.

I think this bears repeating.

BA - just because it doesn't touch the rifling may not mean that it isn't capable of repeatable accuracy, although I would guess that seated into the rifling is a traditonal method for maximizing accuracy.

The bullets are hard cast, air cooled. Fingernail doesn't make a mark on it.

28.0 - 1.49"
28.5 - 1.55 with one flyer
29.0 - 2.15
29.5 - 2.05" with one flyer opening it to 4" (could have shot wrong tgt)
30.0 - 4.1"

I think about 2" at 50yds is it for this load.

Try a different powder tomorrow; suggestions?

Good day at the range.

Eight 4-shot groups with 4350 at 50 yards.
Seated a little longer (sometimes tough to close bolt) and lightly crimped into bottom lube groove.
No filler - case was 80-90% full
Gas checked, sized to .360 dia.
All grooves filled

The bullets are hard cast, air cooled. Fingernail doesn't make a mark on it.

45 gr - 3 shots in .50" all 4 in 1.02
46 gr - all 4 in 0.90"
47 gr - all 4 in 1.24"
48 gr - 3 in .52 all 4 in 1.08
49 gr - 3 in .63 all 4 in 0.81
50 gr - 3 in .53 all 4 in 1.64
51 gr - 4 in 2.32"
52 gr - 4 in 1.63"

Often it was the first 3 touching and the 4th outlying.

Conclusions: 4350 is more consistant (from one powder charge to the next) and gives smaller groups than 4227.
