Hello all, I am new at this reloading business and to this forum but seem to have done some pretty decent loads so far,
but I keep coming up wth questions.
I don't know why my mind keeps dwelling on this; but I have just loaded my first batch of .300 Win Mags. with a bag of Prvi Partizan, jacketed, 150 grain bullets at minimum load.
Here's my question after I got my COAL set and the bullet seated at the proper length; I noticed that with the short neck of the Win Mag case, the bullet seems like it is WELL beyond the case shoulder and into the powder area (not touching the powder though).
I guess I'm wondering whether it is bad to have a bullet beyond the case shoulder when seated.
Any thoughts on this? I won't shoot them till I get this question out of my mind.

COAL is a guide so that the cartridge will fit in any and all rifle magazine and chambers.
The 150 gr bullet is a little light for the 300 mag and to get the aol the bullet may seem to be seated a little to far out of the case.
Seating depth is very forgiving and can be played with to get the best accuracy from your rifle.

Jacketed bullets are not affected by seating below the case sholder.

Thank you!
Yes I know they are light, but I will be looking for accuracy, since my 22-250 and .223 loads are the most accurate with a light varmint style bullet; I'm assuming that it holds true for higher calibers.
Or am I misguided on this?

It would depend on the twist of the rifling.
I'm thinking a bullet weight of 165-180 would be the best for most hunting.

It is a 1:10 twist Savage
This is for long distance target shooting.

That would handle a 210 gr bullet with no problem.

I wonder, is a 150gr too light for 1:10?

It may be too light only because you may not get the best accuracy out from it.

OK, thanks everyone, I will keep experimenting!

Long range trajectory is flatter with heavy bullets, even though they start out slower.

You will want to try different brands of bullets also. My only experience with Prvi Partizan bullets has been with their 286 grain 9.3 bullet, my Chapuis shoots them OK, but it shoots Nosler and Norma bullets into much smaller groups.

Fifty years ago if you wanted an accurate bullet it came in a green box and was made by Sierra, now many manufactures make very accurate bullets. Try different brands and weights, your Savage will probably show a preference for one or two bullets. I have no experience with any of the thirty magnums so can't advise what powder may work the best, but most reloading manuals will state which powder worked best with a particular weight and style of bullet in their tests.

I've loaded the 155 Palma bullet with IMR4350 through 220 HPBT with Re 22 in 10 twist barrels at distance. 150's and lighter are great for deer hunting but generally not considered optimum for long range target shooting. Since a 300 win mag has a limited barrel life you should load wisely.

OK, I had planned for 1000 yd. Fclass with this gun. I guess I had better study up on correct loads and bullet sizes. Apparently there is a lot to learn out there...

Try Hornady SSTs and AMaxs, 165 gr. and up!
Weigh those Privi bullets, some 6.5s I weighed made me wonder if they were only good for fireform loads.

Try 190 or 220 matchkings.

I did weigh a few and was surprised to see that there was between 1 and 2 grain differences plus or minus.
I guess you get what you pay for....!
