This is my 1st. post on this forum and I'm new to this casting business, so please bear with me if I ask silly questions? I'm getting ready to cast some Lee .160gr. GC. WW. bullets using AA1680 & H4895. I'm in need of some sound load data for this rd. I found some info. on AK-47.net that suggests 16-20grs. of AA1680 but it did not list velocity for the 20gr. max load. I'm guestamating it would be approx. 1840 fps. Does that sound about right? I also want to avoid any barrel leading problems. Would quenching these bullets help harden them to avoid leading? Also the velosities listed on the data I've found seems low compared to jacketed bullet data. I'm looking for a near max. load, but want to avoid leading problems. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am a glutton for load data.
Thanks Deadeye

.............Hey Deadeye, welcome to the board :-)!

"........ I'm new to this casting business, so please bear with me if I ask silly questions"

Don't worry about silly questions, ask away.

"..........I'm looking for a near max. load, but want to avoid leading problems."

Leading problems can be caused by other then merely the load. Even the hardest cast lead boolit is no where near as hard and tough as a jacketed one. There are some issues to be delt with. Your barrel's condition, the boolit's design, the type and maybe quantity of lube, AND the load will all play a part in whether or not you get any leading. Also a load in someone else's firearm may be wonderfull, but in yours it may be crap.

Another factor is accuracy. What is your firearm currently capable of, and what are you expecting with the cast boolits?

I have a small ring Mauser chambered to 7.62x39 and a load that is match grade accurate, and shoots at 1920 fps is the Lee C312-155-2R over 28.5grs of surplus 4895. There are a few members here aho've spent some time with SKS's and cast, BTW.

My AK shoots fine with a 154g cast FP GC with 19.5g AA1680 EQ and no leading.

I think I,ll try that load Freightman. I still need some data for that bullet using H4895. If anybody has any data I could sure use it.

Surp 4895 is just a tad slower then canister 4895. Start at 26.0grs.

Thanks for all the great info. guys. Now just one more silly Question. Whats the max. COL for a SKS load?
Thanks Deadeye

P.S. Does anyone hear tried to visit sksboards.com lately? I keep getting a page telling that it is a forbidden site on my server. Just wondering if it was just me or was everybody getting this?

That usually means their server, not yours. This one worked. http://kalashnikov.guns.ru/wwwboard/board3/

If you use google to search you can try the cached pages.

Must be that great minds think alike or at least some of us end up with the same results "great minds" or not! That is exactly the load that shoots well out of my Mini MK X Mauser in 7.62x39. I use R-P cases with SR primers. I the Russian SKS I've used 26.5 gr milsurp 4895 in IMI cases with WLR primers for a limited test.
