I picked up a 270 last week and thought I would cast up a few bullets. I can not find my old Lyman 270 mould. I went to Midway and they only list ONE 270 mould and no Lee or Lyman at all. I had a 130 gr. rn Lyman mould that was a dandy small game bullet. Anyone here up on the 270?

I have all my data from 1976-78 but no bullets and no mould. One of my best loads was a cat sneeze with the 130 and bullseye powder. I killed a few rabbits with that load and never spooked a deer.

Are you looking for a mold or for some as cast bullets?

One thing about 270 moulds is they don’t get bid on to hard over on ebay. I picked up a nice RCBS 270-150-SP and a Lyman 122 grain Loverine a couple years ago on ebay.

Also picked up a 300 pc lot of once fired brass in 270 Win for a good price over on relaodersauction dot com. No one else bid on it.

Lyman’s new 4th edition has load data for the RCBS 150gr and Saeco 140 grain. Which are the only two current moulds.

This spring I’m going to play around and try for some hyper velocity loads with the #280468 Loverine 122 grain. Just for fun and because I can’t stand to not try. All I have to shoot in 270 is my old Weatherby Vanguard with a rough bored noodle barrel. Great action on that thing though as it cycles rounds as fast as you can slap the bolt.

It shoots RCBS 150’s at 2,000 fps level loads using 4198 just fine. I’ve not experimented or used a chronograph on them. I’ve ten pounds of new Rx7 and the Lyman 3rd list loads with the 122gr all the way up to 2,784 fps. I think 2,350 to 2,450 is a good goal. Maybe around 30 to 34 grains of Rx7. Have a few loaded waiting for the weather to clear.

Think I’ll cast some up from straight 2/6 alloy and heat treat them. At high velocity they should be brittle enough to break up on a coyote and pretty much cut them in half. First I have to hit one.

The 150 gr RCBS has a B.C of .327 and the Saeco 140 grain has a BC of .240.
Lyman’s 3rd list the B.C of the 280468 122gr at .193.

I have used the Lyman 280642 (150 grainer) and the Lyman 287346 (a 7mm boolit, 135 grainer, sized down to 0.278”)…

Both were quit accurate with groups at 100 yards being in the 1.25 range, sometimes better…

I do have one ten shot group with the 280642’s that measured 1.1” at 100 yards. I never beat that group no matter what I tried! The bollits that were fliers and ones I pulled during shooting must have all flied and pulled in my favor!...

Got good accuracy with 5744 and Trail Boss with both boolits…

Gas checks can be a bit difficult to find though…

Good-luck…BCB

Here's how my Rem. 700 shoots Lyman 280642 at 50 yards

And the Saeco #270 at 100 yards, it looks like 4 shots but is 5,

And while shooting a Pdog match with the same 700 with the scope at a max of 6X

I also have Lymans 270 version of 311413 but haven't tested it yet.

Thanks and the light bulb went on! I have a 130 gr. 7MM mould and I'll just size it down from 284 to 278! Noow we are in business and I will keep my eye out for a good 270 mould. The rifle I picked up is a California ugly FN Mauser action that was supposedly made by Weatherby and is dated 1948. The bore is perfect and the stock is in good shape too, I hope to get to shoot it when it gets a little warmer here as I don't shoot so good when temps are below zero.

LBT makes a number of different weights, spitzer and LFN from 90gr to at least 130gr.

A few years ago you might have been able to buy a cheap mould on flea bay. But now on the rare occasion they show up they command a premium price.

And... Graf has both the RCBS and SAECO designs offered at a bit lower price.

Molds come and go....
But when was the last time you saw a pile of .270 gas checks??
A friend in Houston decided he'd buy every one he could find, and accumulated probably 10k in 3 years... he won't run out, but he hasn't seen any lately either.
