I just picked up an RCBS 45-270-SAA. I plan to feed it to my SRH 454. Is it reasonable to hope for 1400 fps? If so, what alloy and load would you recommend?

Thanks,
Doug

You sure can reach 1400 fps

I can go faster with my 300 gr cast in my 7.5" 454 SRH , I use 2400 .
Not at home , so I can't tell you for sure what I load for the 1500 fps I load to .

But 26 Gr of 2400 ( if my memory is right ) with a WW Large pistol primer
I looked and 28 gr is listed as max with a 300 gr jacketed bullet

That is a plain base bullet , if my memory is right
So leading is a posible consern

I would use WW or water droped WW

As johnch said, 1400 fps would be a rather mild load in .454 Casull. I get over 1500 fps with 335 gr. 452651 GC Lymans even in my short barreled Freedom Arms 83. I use 28 gr. of Hodgdon Lil'Gun and a CCI 400 primer. All disclaimers apply, this is MY load in MY gun. Your results may vary.

Now whether you can do it with a PB boolit is another question.
