Just scored 20 pounds of Ozokerite for a really cheap price. I have some really old lube formulas that call for this along with Japan Wax (haven't found any of that yet) steam cylinder oil, mutton tallow etc... Anybody here ever try to use Ozokerite in their lube? This stuff seems really HARD and reportedly has a relatively high melting point, maybe up to 200 degrees.

Keep in mind that you want lube that will only stick to your boolits as a minimum, not maximum. In other words, you want the lowest practical viscosity, and that means loosey-goosey at time of firing. 200 melting temp is outrageous except possibly in death valley with a machine gun. ... felix

Actually it could be as high as 200 degrees, but then again it could be as low as 140. I'm trying to find out now what catalog number this wax is.

So how are you making out with that Ozocerite?

Interested in all things Kephart!

Japan Wax sold in the US (according to Sharpe) was at times just Carnauba Wax, properly it is made from a different tree but is mostly interchangable for our purposes. As with all these products there are and were different grades available, and it is hard to duplicate those old recipes exactly because they were using off the shelf imported products from sources and processes that simply don't exist today. Candelilla wax is another in this category.

Here is a link for Carnauba-

Japan Wax is a little harder, here is an exporter (good luck with this one):

It should be noted the both Carnauba and Japan Wax have been used alone as hard dry lubes for factory swaged boolits such as 22LR and 38 Special. These lubes used a different philosophy than Felix's, typically they are still fully present when the boolit hits the target, minus bore wear.
