Winchester model 1892 44-40 with octagon barrel, serial # is 1019X. According to Winchester the gun was made also in 1892. The gun works and fires fine. All original. The wood is pretty good shape the octagon barrel and magazine metal had looks a little tough but gun is about 119 years old. Trying to determine the selling price of gun. What is the price range for this vintage gun?

Good morning
I have 2 of these. Both SRC 44-40. One made in 1893 the other in 07.
Take a good look at the barrel. Especially the muzzle area. If there is deep rifling all the way to the end of the muzzle it probably will shoot well. The throat area as long as it is not deeply pitted can be fitted with fat boolits.
So from what you wrote with no pictures I would have to write anywhere from $500 up. 3 years ago it would have been double that. But today less as there is just not the volumn of buyers out there with descresionary money to plop for another rifle.
But check the auction sites. Gunbroker will give you a good idea what people will pay. Selllers ask all sorts of things.

Yeah, that's about the going rate for relics. Something complete and shootable, no finish, about $1,200.00 + 20% for antique sr# though these days.

Had a Winchester guy confirm the gun is in deed 100% original, verifying the serial #, letter stamping on gun, wood, barrel, all the right components are indeed authentic. I saw similar vintage on gun broker for $ 4,995.00( it did not sell). I know the one I have fires has good rifling, etc. I also had a few collectors say with the economy this is wrong time to sell. Thoughts?

You are selling art, not a gun per se. Yes, this is the wrong board for art sales for the most part. However, someone who has an exit buyer already might take you up on the deal. That is how art objects usually sell in a depressed economy. ... felix

There are a lot of variables with old winchesters. There were standard length bbls. and some guns had either shorter or longer bbls. Some had longer or shorter magazines. Some had special sights. All these things are taken into consideration by discriminating buyers. Take it to a gun show and walk around with it. Some collector will happily tell you if there are any special features and how much it might be worth.

I'd think a "wall hanger, relic" would be 500 or less. While a 1st year 92 44-40 in top mechanical condition with good-excellent finish and fine-excellent bore and no special order features would be in the 4500 range. So I'd guess what you have in the market is something in between. At that point it's a cr*p shoot on what someone will pay and the details become everything. It's more history than art but the price or value of either is elusive.
