View Full Version : Remelting boolits?

I just came across around 100 pounds of already cast lead boolits.
Some have the gas checks on them.
I am wondering what I would do with these before melting?
I assume I can just throw the boolits without the gas checks into the pot, right?

* A few of them also have some lube on them already. Are these good to go into the pot as well?*

Thanks for the help!

The gas checks will just float to the top of the pot, so you can throw them all in the pot and skim the checks off the top when the leads gone molten.

I'm pretty new at this stuff too, so I hear you! I've melted quite a bit of range lead and most were jacketed bullets. The lead runs right out the base of the jacket and the jacket floats to the top. Gas checks would be no different...

Why are you melting them? Maybe you can trade them. What cals and weights?

If you do decide to melt them down, I'd do it outside or in a well ventilated area. The lube will make a lot of smoke.
But another answer to your question is yes you can melt them back down even with the gas checks on. As mentioned above the GC's will just float to the top.

Thats a possibility.
I will have to check. The boolits are not in my possession yet.

Dont melt them, they are no good..
send them to me and I will dispose them for you in the proper manner :kidding:

Seriously, just smelt them the way you would do wheel weights.
the checks will float, the lube will flux, you will be 100# richer and I am green with envy..

If they are not a caliber you need I would trade them on here for what you do need. No sense wasting all that effort to make them if they are good boolits.

If you do melt them, recover and save the checks; they may be reformed and used. Stick a 1/4-20 round head screw into the chuck of a drill press and use it as an arbor press to reopen the checks enough to use them.

I would melt the lube off, or at least most of it. You can boil it off or use the oven at 250 or so.
Gas checks cost around 4 cents each these days. 100 pounds of average bullets could be 4000 to 5000 in all.
You might have $150.00 worth of gas checks.
