I'm thinking about buying THIS TARGET (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=173364) to teach Jarrett about shooting at a deer. He has killed one, but is not knowledgeable on organs location and such.
Wha' ya' think?

As with many deer targets, including the nice NRA targets, I find the pictured heart is located a little farther back than it actually is. I find the heart on deer to actually be directly between the legs. The height of the heart is about right though. The other thing most deer targets, including this one, don't show is that the back 1/3 of the lung lobes over lap the paunch. This target kid of shows the edge of the liver where it also lays over the paunch. A "behind the shoulder shot" that hits this area is a gut shot deer that can go quite a distance prior to dying.

All in all not a bad deer target for white tail deer and will do as well as any other target. Just suggest keeping in mind the above for shot placement. For a shot as such I teach to hold about 1/3 the body heigth (from brisket to top of shoulder) centered on the fore leg as pictured. The objectect though is to put the bullet through the heart regardless of the angle or leg position. Such a shot will hit the heart and/or the major vessel/veins and break one or both legs most often. The deer won't go far at all.

I'm with Larry on this, the heart is actually further forward. I also find the shoulder blade is considerably larger than what is pictured.

Two dimension targets don't work very well to show the position of organs. If you could find an old foam archery target, that might help as well.

I can't help but wonder how long that would stand up to multiple rounds from a .44 mag.

I think trigger time is more important at an early stage
being able to hit will give the little fella confidence in actually taking the shot
I used to show my son a pic of deer from mags(differing poses) and ask
him where he would shoot
deer as we all know do not always stand broadside

I used the archery targets like this to help people learn where to aim. I'd tape a large balloon full of red water to simulate the heart BEHIND the picture. Then adjust the angle to the shooter to make them aware of the hearts location at odd angles and ranges. It's surprising how quick this works. I'd love to be able to make a MOVING target that does this.

A friend told me about a computer program that let's you set up any angle shot and shows what organs would be hit. More imfo at deeranddeerhuntingshotsimulator.com

:D that's a hilarious pic of the second deer.

Do they have any pics of Doe's to shoot at? If you find a few bullet holes in the horns you'll know he's not focused.... :)

That's it. I know its not the same as shooting at a target but it does look like it would/could serve as a good learning tool

It has been a number of years back now, but I went through a bunch of hunting/outdoor mags. and cut out the images of game animals likely to be hunted here abouts.

These images showed the critters at different angles etc. so the wife spent a goodly amount of time in dry fire practice, learning where to hold to put the bullet into the vitals given the angle and position.

I put the images on the walls in our family room and could hold a practice session most any time.

This is a great way to show correct holds and to help the inexperienced hunter to visualize bullet path and hold needed to put em where it counts.

No cost involved and lots of trigger time!

Keep em coming!

One trains as one hunts,

One hunts as one trains

No blaze orange vital area on a deer, yet that is what most people practice on.

Piece of cardboard and a box cutter can make something close also.

I never shoot aat any other target with a bow, but a cardboard deer.

That's about all they got right unless deer lot different than Whitetails we have down here. As far as target will be helpful but deer never tend to stop broadside all the time. Teach him where to shoot if deer coming straight at him. Or siding away from him.....hunting deer is learning eperince and i have been hunting and killing them 45 years.

Make sure he realizes deer is three dimensions my son's first buck was shot just were the "book " showed problem was deer was facing him!

I had my son shoot a lot I even had him in muzzle loading league but when he shot his first deer I just scratched my head and said why did you hit it there? He says "thats were the book shows"

The buck was walking strait to him when he shot at 50 yards. Itdid not go anywhere the shot hit it in the right shoulder the bullet went under the Shoulder and skin breaking every rib and smashed the rear hip . He did have to shoot it again to kill it but it could not move and with right lung collapsed would have died soon. The gun was his Great grandfathers early 1900's Winchester Model 94 in 30 WCF (30-30) with a 150 gr winchester silvertip load. the bullet was 1 inch from exiting deer after passing full length and smashing much bone.

I shot the #17 CBA deer hunter postal match late last year and when my BIG running deer target arrived I promptly took it to town and copied off 4 full sized duplicated. It's a great target.
