Has anyone made a .22 cal Kentucky style squirrell rifle?
something that would have good short range performance using a .209 cap for power

WICKED -
Howdy !
Have you given any thought to use of a larger calibre, such as .36 ?
A rifle w/ a barrel diam that could function w/ patched 000 buck would
be pretty economical to operate, would have ample power; and would hold promise for reasonable accuracy.
Just a thought.
Best of luck in your endeavors !

Not a kit as it is shown on the blank I carved it out of, but a 25 caliber Tennessee poor boy. Uses #3 .250 cal buckshot which weighs 24 grains and 20 grains of 3f. It is a flintlock. Works pretty good on squirrels.

Now aint that a sweet little left hand rifle, I want it. Where did the barrel come from?
Northman? Where in Minnesota do you get a squirrel that tastes like something other than pine tar soap? I tried a few when I lived in Park Rapids and boy howdy they sure were rank. Here corn fed squirrel is a treat.

Daniel Boone's famous "Ticklicker" rifle was a .28 caliber flintlock. And I have 2 .32's.

I have a lot of oaks where I live but there are also a lot of oaks in the Paul bunyan State forest towards Akeley. Takes a bit of scouting to find them. the little red squirrels are not very tasty. The barrel is a Rayl which I got from Stonewall Creek muzzleloading supply. I also see them listed in Muzzleloading Builders Supply. I should have stated next to a blank like it was carved out of. At the ranges I can hit a squirrel with iron sights, this little rifle is pretty sudden. Small bores are fun.

I have a 22 muzzleloader I built back in the early 80s. Using regular percussion caps not primers or ??. It is accurate for the first shot but then the bore needs to be swabbed. I have also used an air rifle pellet and a cap, decent accuracy but so far, no game has been taken.
I rememebr visiting with Cecil Brooks one day. He had a gorgeous rifle on the bench, (did he make any other kind?). It was cut for a 25 caliber round ball. I asked who who want such a small bore rifle. He didn't say a word but pointed to his Mrs. She was sitting, visiting with us and keeping an eye on Mr Brooks. It was a wonderful rifle and I hope shee put it to good use.
