An epic test of mostly jacketed bullets in the 6.5X55 over on Canadiangunnutz:

I submitted some cast to test (for "Part Two") and they out penetrated the bunch!

Lee 174gr Cruise Missile over 20.0 grs of H4198.

Here is the gist of it. This was not at all "scientific" (too few data points, wet newspaper ws not necessarily consistent, etc.), but it illustrates a point. Slow and heavy wins the penetration race.

Wet Newspaper, in 6.5X55 over 20.0 grs of H4198, estimated MV of 1500 fps. Penetration far exceeded that of any jacketed bullet (next closest was about 17"). Expansion was among the smallest, retained weight was about average.

Cast 174 gr (as dropped)
Average Penetration (inches): 24
Average Weight Retained (grain): 122.7
Average Weight Retained (%): 70.5
Average Expansion (inches): 0.360

Cast 174 gr (water quenched)
Average Penetration (inches): 24+
Average Weight Retained (grain): 128.8
Average Weight Retained (%): 74
Average Expansion (inches): 0.438
*Under estimated their penetration, only recovered one.
