Had a fellow give me a large propane tank but it has the old valve on it. Do I have to have it re certified and change the valve, and where do I get this done? I think it is a 20 gallon tank about 5.5' tall and about the same as the little ones around.
Would it be worth it?

Your local propane dealer probably can tell you all you need to know about it.

here is a link to a web page on propanr cylinders/tanks

http://www.propane101.com/propanecylinderrequirements.htm

consumer type 4 to 40 lb tanks require OPD valves, that I know. Industrial cylinders (forklift tanks) do not require opd valves.

The place where you would get it filled can help you also.

One thing that is seldom mentioned and seldom done is to remove the plastic name sleeve/wrapper form exchange bottles. There is a neat image of what can happen if we don't follow the instructions to remove that plastic sleeve.

Here are the measurements the tank its self is 42" tall with a base and valve protector bringing it to 48" tall the circumference is 48" has a bunch of numbers at the top DOT number ect. I could use it to smelt with and even heat my shop if not to expensive to get right.
I have a friend who works at the propane distributor so will get in touch with him

Thje tank you describe is a #100 tank and its useable liquid capacity ( 80 percent ) is 25 gallons. You can verify this if a stamp says W.C. 238-240 which equates 30 gallons
The OPD valve is not required. If inspection is due the propane dealer can recertify and stamp a new date on it. They should do ir free or at least cheap.

What lwknight is saying is exactly what we did a few years ago with our big tank. Simply took it in told them the date on the tank expired. They said give them a couple minutes and they'll stamp on a new date. And guess what they did just that for free, which for my other half is the best price for anything.

Spraypaing "CUTTING TORCH" on the side of the tank.

boom, industrial tank, no new valve needed, and they fill it for you. At least that's all that's needed around here.

Say you are using it for a forge or branding iron heater.

My 100# bottle is stamped 1958 and they refilled it 2 years ago no problem. Those old cast iron tanks last forever.
