Does anyone load the lee .30 cal soupcan boolit (in 308 win) over alliant 2400 powder. I currently load it over 11gr of unique. It shoots pretty good to 100yrds at 1750 fps mv. I have a 1-10 twist boltgun. Lyman 3rd doesnt show 2400 under a 120gr boolit.

.............I may have shot it with 2400 and I experimented with it quite heavily in years past. Too cold in the shop to go fetch my load notebooks. Here's one of my favorite plinker loads:

8.0grs of Red Dot, Lee C309-113F. 1903 Sporter Springfield. Iron sights, 50 yards

About 20 years back when we lived in the boonies I was hot after the ground squirrels around the place. Was getting bored with a 22RF and worked this load up. VERY effective with most any hit. One of my regular Tuesday shooting buddies had an uncommonly fine shooting M94 Winchester and had produced some fantastic 5 shot 100 yards groups using 23.0grs H4198 + dacron @ 2100 fps. All were 1.5" or less and the Winchester was wearing a Leupold VXII 3-9 at the time.

I'd sure suspect you could use any 2400 load shown for a boolit of equal or heavier weight just fine. If the load shown was say 150 grains, maybe back off 10% or so to start. Of course that would be due to velocity considerations and not pressure issues. I don't know what speed you're looking for so that's why I even mentioned backing the charge down.

Rats, from the title, I thought you were gonna shoot or had shot a soupcan from 2400 yards.

off the top of my head 15 grs is where i'd start.
pistol primer of course.

My load in 30-06 is 20gr 2400. It's mild and accurate, don't have a chony so just guess it is about 1900fps.

Why the pistol primer? Am I doing something wrong buy using rifle primers?

Lyman 40th (1955) lists 18gr 2400 under the 125gr 311465 for 1850fps.

My experience with the .308 Win. is that it takes a fair amount of pressure to seal the cases in the chambers (Partly because many .308 chambers are actually 7.52 X 51 Nato chambers) You can use around 15 grains of 2400 to give aproxamtely the velocity you are getting now, but the pressure will be down around 11,000 PSI. Using more powder, say 22 grains will raise the pressure, but get you in the 2400 fps range which may be a bit faster than you want for that boolit. I would stick with Unique ( I usually use around 12 grains, or Red Dot as has been suggested for slower loads.

not necessarily "wrong", just with pressures under around 40000, pistol powders have seemed to give better and more consistent ignition. Try them both, one will definately work better than the other.

i use the under 40k rule too generally.
with a light boolit, hitting it in the base with a bunch of primer blast is not helpng you in any way.

that and a sp will light 12 grs 2400 easily enough in a 357, and a lp will light 20 in a big 44-45 case.
you want to ignite the powder and let it do the work.
