Anyone have an idea what years the 358 Whelen were made? I was at a local shop, and they have a new one that has been around for a while....the green box had an older logo. They were asking around $550.

The .35 Whelen was made in 1988. Better jump on that one or it will be gone soon.

Buy that rifle! Excellent price if in nice condition- I would snap it up in a heartbeat if it was on the West Coast!
That is the nicest stock design Remington ever made- I have a 250Savage Classis (1984, I think) that is soooooo accurate.
Don't let this one get away!

Leave right now to get to the gun shop. I restocked a 722 in 300 Savage for my son with a short action Remington Classic stock. It is striking. The guy that had the rifle wanted a plastic stock. No accounting for taste.

Those Remington Classic stocks are a VERY nice design, indeed. One of the local shops has one in 8 x 57 Mauser that has sat for 6 months at $599. I'm kinda surprised it lasted through deer season, but with milsurps in the same caliber going for half that price......well, people vote with their wallets, and milsurp ammo has largely dried up. I've pondered buying it, but have other things on the radar at present and an existing 8 x 57 that shoots castings GREAT.

358, It is brand new still in the old box. I think the box still had the Dupont Logo on it. That's why I was wondering the age....It must have made it for a long time without anyone grabbing it, but that would be my luck, I guess. This really makes me wish they would let me in their basement to look around. My understanding is that they have a very large stock of guns there.

C A Plater has it right, 1988.
I first read about 35 whelen in a speer reloading manual spring if 1974, the cartridge just seem right enough energy for most anything, and a wide selection of pistol bullets avaliable that could be used.
In 1986 they introduced the limited classic in 350 rem mag temptation was strong and money short. the 350 mag did not use easy to obtain '06 or 270 brass and a feeling of loss came over me when the last in the local gunstore was gone.
In 1988 when remington announced the 35 whelen would be the limited classic I was saving pennies for weeks before the rifles arrived.
The guys in the gun store let me look at all of them and the one with the straightest grain of wood through the pistol grip was labled with my name on the box.
I put it on layaway and it took a year to pay for it.
It has been my hunting rifle ever since.
The long throat made most pistol bullets group too wild to keep intrest up.
after 20 years of 225 seirra spitzer boattails @2450 all the copper was removed from the barrel.
Now days me and my whelenator are happy with RCBS 200gr gas checked flat points at 1900fps
and some lyman 358 430 pb (200gr roundnose) at 1350 with the bullet hollow
pointed.
With the diffrent bullet styles it's easy to tell the light loads from the thumpers.

clodhopper, Your post reflects a lot of common sense. Many old rounds are thrown aside for the newest, greatest and most promoted rounds and guns. The Remington classics are some of the best looking rifles out there. In addition they have brought back many older rounds which have a great deal of merit. I like old things as I am old and as my son has stated I don't own any thing that is not old. Congratulations on obtaining such a fine rifle which has given you such joy.

I did call and told them to set it aside for me. The problem is they are a small-ish dealer with a lot of guns, and they kind of run the business loose. I won't feel right until I go in and put money down and do a little paperwork. It will be Thursday before that happens.

OK Wednesday. I made a run today, and it was still there, now it has my name on it, along with a down payment.

It's funny how a 35 Whelen wasn't even on my radar screen a month ago. Now I have dies comming, 2 moulds and a rifle set aside. Fate my friends. Fate.

There is a 14 Remington and model 8 in my future too....

They just " show up " in my gun safe sometimes. It is best to " sneak " them into the safe when she isn't looking.

I'm in an internal debate right now. My Christmas present from SWMBO was a slightly buba'd mauser 98. The debate centers around the fact that it is chambered in 8x57 but the headspace is a tad large, I know I can get around this with fireformed cases, either 8x57 or reformed 30-06 class brass. I'm kinda torn though, thought heavily about barreling to 35 Whelen. But the thing is I'm frugal, if it shoots well with the barrel I've thought about just rechambering to 8mm-06.

Like the idea of a 35 Whelen.

Moonie:

The rechamber might be cheaper, dependent on the availability of a reamer but if you can get a A&B barrel from Midway for a decent price, 35 Whelen is very inviting. I rebarrelled a M98 in 257 Rob with an A&B barrel and the blasted thing is one of my best shooting rifles. It shoots better than some of my more expensive barrels.

I have shot both calibers and am partial to the 35Whelan (and it is a factory round verse wildcat),

Happy New Year to everyone.

Not worried about price as SWMBO said I can do whatever I want with it, she has known for years that I wanted that rifle to do something custom with.

I would loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee that rifle! Woodleigh in Australia make an awesome 250Gn bullet for the 8mm and they are fine cast boolit rifles, I have an 8mm GC/FP dual cavity group buy mould on the way! Can't wait!

Say, does anyone have a bit of 35 Whelen brass they would spare, maybe 20 or so to mess around with?
