Ok, this might be a dumb question but I don't and am wondering if you can use a cast boolit for your 45-70 in a 45cal muzzleloader instead of a patched ball. I have only shot one muzzleloader in my life and that was 30 some years ago.

Thanks

It probably won't go in. The other problem is that unless it is a fast twist bore the boolit won't stabilize. Most of those guns were made for a round ball. 1-60 or 66 twist.
If the boolit will go in, you would have to shoot real BP in order for the boolit to slug up to groove diameter. That is what happens in the long range guns but then you will have other issues like the nipple burning out in 10 to 15 shots because of the pressure.
If you bought the gun new the literature should tell the twist. If not then you can determine it with a tight jag patch combination. Or post the model and someone here can probably tell you. If it is a RB gun then Lee makes reasonable priced RB molds so you can get started.

Boz, Thanks for the reply. I haven't bought one but was wondering because I use bp in my 45-70. I didn't think about the twist (didn't even occur to me and i know that) thanks for the reply

And the only stupid questions are the ones you wait to ask 'til after the paramedics show up.

Alan;
I never thought of it that way, but your right.

Well lets see-the 45 muzzleloader I shot a lifetime ago, used to take .440 lead balls with a greased cloth patch.

My 45-70 takes lead boolits sized to .459.

Therein lies the problem...or challenge....

I have seen a lot of strange things built up, a suprising number ofthem work. A rifle built for a bullet will work if sized proper and the right alloy.

I worked as an EMT/P, some times you don't want to ask, but they tell you anyway. "But I only had two beers" being the most common.
