Just to have a little fun, What Is your favroite caliber in a Mauser rifle.
Mine is 7.65x53 in a '91 Long rifle I got a month or so ago.

I voted .30/06 simply because it's my favorite rifle caliber, I had an FN Standard model in .30/06 and currently have 2 98k's I rebarreled to .30/06.

I've always held a great deal of respect for the little 7mm and even had 2 sporters chambered for it, so I guess that would be my 2nd choice.

My favorite Mauser caliber would have to be the 11mm. Because, you know, it's a .44 (sort of), and I'm all about the .44...

On the other hand, my favorite caliber to convert a Mauser to would have to be .358 Winchester. If ever there was a perfect truck gun, it's a beat up, pitted '98 Mauser with the original sights and military stock chambered in .358.

Err I have a Brazilain ( I think ) 98 chambered in 30/06
I also have a extra original 30/06 stepped barrel if I ever get around to changing out the original

But I believe the rifle probely started out as a 7x57 and was converted when the USA helped out Bazil with arms

I voted for 8x57 but I also have several Mausers in other calibers that weren't listed as well. They are almost perfect actions to convert to other calibers with. I currently have Mausers in 30-06, 308 Win, 260 Rem, 257 Roberts, and 7.62x39 (a 1903 Turk with a small ring barrel)

I will be building a 358 Win as well in about 6 weeks when I come home on leave from Afghanistan.

6.5x55 is the best. I traded a 100 rounds of CCI 22mag for it. I put five shot's under an inch at a 100 meters with standard open sights. Not bad for a gun made in 1900.

The 7.65 Argie. M 1909 DWM and my 1891 7.65 Argie Engineer`s carbine. After these I would say my 1908 Brazilian 7 x 57. I have a few too many 8 x 57 rifles to have a favorite, if I did it would be either my G or K 43`s.Robert

I voted 7,92x57 errr uh 8mm. One of the most overlooked, under appreciated cartridges out there. Properly loaded it can bang heads with 30/06 and 308 all day long. I curse the bullet manufacturers for not making a better selection pellets for it! J/K....kind of.

I voted "other" also because I like every Mauser cartridge all my Mausers are chambered in. I find each has it's own use, likes and dislikes. For "all around" use it's very hard to pick between the 7.65 and the 8x57 although if I had a 9x57 that might get my vote.

No surprises here, the 7x57 is my all time favourite.

Having said that I could get used to a few more in the gun safe especially if there was a short action in 250 AI, a 6.5x57, and a 9.3x62 to go along with the 404 which is the 7x57's stable mate.

Hey Otto welcome aboard..
I started the poll and would have a hard time picking just one.
I like all I have tried, Just happen to like the 7.65 best at the moment. From the looks of things I am either going to have to get a 6.5x55 or have my shooting rights revoked.

I'm really having a hard time believing that on a cast boolit forum I'm the only who likes the 11mm Mauser. I mean the 71/84 rifle was tube fed, and the 390 grain boolit is kicked out at 1400+ fps. What's not to love? :-D

I voted 7mm, even though I don't own one at present, and own several .30-06's, because the 06 is NOT a Mauser cartridge IMHO, and thus, not a valid selection based on the question.

I have an old 7x57 Mauser that was turned into a silk purse by a friend of mine. It did a number on an 8 point whitetail earlier this season. I've owned it for over 35 years. Thats why I voted for the old war horse 7x57.

So far as milsurp bolt guns, I've no complaints about my VZ24 in 7.92x57 or my M36 Mexican in 7x57 but for just plain all-around fun-to-shoot, I rank my '09 Argie cavalry carbine right alongside my '98 Krag.

you guys seem to know a lot about Mausers so here is a question for you.

I have a model 98 that came back from north Africa after WWI it is a 8 mm rimmed cartridge bore .323 the stock has a two piece butt that is dovetailed together, the receiver has the Egyptian crest, and the rear sight is in Arabic what caliber is it likely to be?

I have NRA's book on Mauser and they do not list a 8mm rimmed round for this gun. I got the gun at a garage sale for a couple bucks it was in really bad shape but for my purpose it was fine, I wanted to blow it up. The closest case I found to fit the chamber was the 7.62X54 Russian . I thought it might be British 303 but is was not as close as the Russian round in dimensions ( I have misplaced the measurements).

Firefly,

I'd suggest you go to a library and ask for a copy of Frank DeHaas's book on Bolt Action Rifles.

It sounds like you may have a 8mm Siamese Mauser. It was developed for a rimmed 8mm Round (8x52mm - you can reload for this by using 7.62x54 Russian brass that has been reformed and trimmed to fit or you can buy ready made at some expense. It uses standard 8-mm bullets)

Your description makes this a close match. If its in good shape you may get a call on selling it from some of us on the list. these are collectible rifles for some.

I recently obtained a "Chileno Modelo 1895 Mauser" chambered in 7.62 NATO, made in Loewe, Berlin. The wood is absolutly the best I've ever seen, rifling is fantastic with deep grooves and sharp lands. I fired it, but the group was nothing to rave about. Will be shooting cast lead as soon as the weather warms up. This is my second Mauser. The other I obtained is a K98 with all matching numbers. I had it sporterised in the early 60's. Shoots 8mm like a house on fire...

The rifle was in bad shape when I got it it is worse now my intent was to put it on a board with a copy of safe reloading rules . I will do some checking into the Siamese Mauser it has been awhile since I was reading up on the gun. I did come across some info on a low powered target round that sounded close also.

You nailed it, it is a Siamese Mauser . Now I am wondering if it came from north Africa at all?
The people I bought it from are long moved out of the area and their grandfather (guns owner) passed in the 60's . If only the gun could speak.

While not strictly a military chambering, a great many military mausers were rechambered to 9.3x62 and taken to Africa by more than a few German settlers. While not that well known here in the U.S. it is an extremely versatile cartridge. I know of one 9.3x62 BRNO with more than 650 cape buffalo, several lion and a couple of elephant to its credit. All this from a .30-06 size case! That rifle is now in the possession of African PH Kevin Robertson.
Also, I know it's heresy but my current 7x57 is a 7x57R in a Dakota Model 10.
Regards,
Tony

I had an old Mauser 98/22 in 8 x 57 which I converted to a 6.5 x 55 MM and added a new thumbhole stock and it is a tack driver.

I also have an old commercial Mauser action in a sporterized stock in 8 x 57 MM just so my cases and mold get some use.

Had to vote other simply because I have to many to pick from. If you were talking about ORIGINAL calibers I would have to pick the 6.5x55

My current lineup consists of 7.65x54, 6.5x55, 6.5-06, 260 Rem., 308, 30-06, 8x57, 8mm06, 300 Win.,and 45-70. Working on a 257 Roberts now. With exception of the 7.65 and 45-70 all were built on VZ24 actions.

I've owned 2 '95 Mauser 7x57's. One was an FN, accuracy-wise, it hit every dirt clod I pointed it at. The other was a sporterized DWM that someone had put in a California-Style stock. I stuck a scope on it one day (it came with Weaver Bases) and put 4 175 Winchester RN's in an inch at 75 yards; off a bipod!!!
Really wish I hadn't sold it.
Now driving a #1A 7x57. Or, I guess in that guise, it's better referred to as a .275 Rigby.

7.62x51 (new fn 98 built)
6.5x55 ( 2 early swede '96's)
8x57 (several)

i vote for 7x57 and 9.3x57.

my son's 98 7mm is absolutey ugly as sin with heavy rusting and pitting on the exterior, but the bore is mint. it'll put 140gr sierra pro hunters into a 3/4" group at 100yds all day.

but my favorite mauser rifle is my german guild gun in 93.x57. it's a small ring, large shank stalking rifle. very slim and lightweight with appeture sights. it kicks at both ends when stoked up, but the black bears drop and don't get back up. i can't wait for my 9.3 GB mold to come any week now!

8mm, because it will handle just about anything I need a rifle for, while shooting cast boolits. I love my '08 DWM Brazilian in 7x57, and have killed more deer with it than any other rifle, but I don't consider it a cast-boolit gun. Although my buddy Paul, also a member here, does.
