how do you go about slugging a barrel if you dont have a mould for that caliber?

i have a ar57 (.224) i tried slugging with some .22lr boolits, but i dont think they were big enough as they just slid smooth thru the barrel. they picked up rifling marks, but not very deep.

Give the slug a very gentle bump with a hammer on a hard surface and it will expand out a little so you can get an impression .

what you need to do is compress the 22 bullet to make it fatter around .230 should be good and then drive the bullet down the bore..a vice or vice grips should work well as you have more controle over the squezeing

Drill a 1/4" hole in a 2 x 4.

Pour some lead in it.

Break the wood apart to recover the lead cylinder with wrinkles.

Use it as a slug.

I'd try starting at .224. Make sure that your sizing die actually gives you .224, the last Lyman .225 die that I got gives me .2259. Doesn't work for anything I've got....

The only way your idea will work for the 223 is to use a 22mag case for a slug mold, then it is holding no to it while you drill out the base.

Calamity your are right about not working without some thought. and may not be worth the trouble. As far as holding the 22 mag case a pair of pliers holding onto the base and drilling from top down may work.
Not real sure if you would even get a proper dia. to slug a .224 barrel using the mag case.
