This is my very first post on this site. I thought I would share an experience I had this morning with you.
I went out this morning in search of a mitre box to finish the trim in my bathroom, living in a small town my choices of stores to search are limited. While I was looking for the mitre box I was also looking for a small pan to use for casting as I have discovered my dutch oven I use for smelting is difficult at best to use for casting. After all possible sources for a mitre box had been exhausted I continued to look for the pan. On an off chance there is an antiques, i guess fleamarket would be the best term for it, I decided perhaps there was something in there I could use. The I stumbled across IT. IT was not the pan I was looking for, instead I found this;

I assume it is a plumbers lead melter. It had a price of $37 on it. I offered $25 and he took it. All I really wanted was the little bucket on top but I've gotten a restoration project now as well. The valve is stuck and the pump seals have apparently rotted away. Not to mention it is still filled with some very old foul smelling fuel. I'll put the pot to immediate use while I can learn more about repairing the burner.

Looks to be likely nearly what you paid for the melter worth of lead in the pot yet ! Nice find if nothing else the top melting pot will serve you well . I have one simmilar that I use after I have done my initial smelting ( in another pot ) to alloy batches of metal .

Congratulations and welcome aboard!

I suspect you may have a gasoline stove; they were common in the 30's.

As you are restoring it, you may use any kind of fuel you like, but I suggest, not gasoline.

For much more information about what a neat find you made, go to the 3rd 'stickie' in this section, and click on 'this old pot'. When it opens, go down to the 9th post and click on 'for plumber's pots'. It will tell you all about the 'king of the lead melters'.
Great find at a great price!

Those things are fine once you get them cleaned up and working right. You'll love it. And yes, chances are it's a gasoline furnace and it's safe to use gas in it. In fact, that's about all that will really work right in it. It's an OUTSIDE toy. Very cool blue flame about 2" around and 6" high accompanied by a jet like roaring sound when running right.

I still sue my gasoline plumbers pot and gasoline "blowtorch". Safe enough one you understand how they work.
