what would be a good light weight boolit for target/range use. primarily shooting paper and steel plates from 50-150 yards.

What is the twist rate of your barrel?

I use a Lyman 311410 mold for plinking. It's a plain-base 130gr bullet that was designed for the M1 Carbine. I use it in my 1-10 and 1-12 twist rate barrels and I can roll tin cans with it pretty well. I keep the velocity around 1650fps with this boolit and it does fine in my SKS as well as my Mausers and Arisakas with 308 win and 30-06 barrels.

for 1/10

I'd recommend the 311410 or LEE's 155gr if you feel you have to boost the speed and put a gascheck on it.

my son (he's 8) shoots my '06 with 170 gr. fp's and red dot for 1700 fps. still noisy, but mild on recoil andhog killable.

I would go with the 311410 if conserving lead and not using gas checks was an issue. I lucked into an old Ideal 308241 150gr. RN PB that I like for plinking with in the .30's.

I use a Lee 311-100-2R over 5 grains of Bullseye with a standard primer. This I shoot in my 1917 Enfield. It creates a loud pop, but not a bang, if that makes any sense. Recoil is undetectable and accuracy is moment of soda can at 50 yds. It's a recreational plinking round.

I had a Lyman 311359 mould which cast 120 gr (fully dressed) bullets of WWs that was a very good bullet in my .308s and .30-06s. I used it over Unique for around 1750 fps (I had a chronograph back then also) with excellent accuracy. Headshot many a grouse with it. Also it was an excellent bullet and I did a lot of longer range plinking with it out ot 300 yards or so. It has a short nose and a good bearing surface for accuracy. Unfortuneatley I traded that mould off with a Parker Hale '06 which was a mistake on both accounts:-(

These days I fine the Le C312-155-2R and the RCBS 30-150-FN to do as well but they may be a little heavier than you want. If you want a really light weight load I use a lot of Lee TL314-90-SWCs sized .311 over 3.2 gr of Bullseye for 900 fps out of my current 4 hunting '06s. I've done some pretty decent shooting to 200 yards with it. Recoil is nil and so is muzzle balst.

No one is recommending the 114gr. Lee gas checked wadcutter or "soupcan" CB?

Maven,
If I had experience with the "Soupcan" I might have recommended. I don't have the mold so I could not be an advocate for it :) but you could...

id really like to shoot as cheaply as possible, in both powder and lead, so gas checks are out.

Try the Lee 311-100-2R or Lyman 311008 over light charges of pistol powder. Larry's recommendation would be a good place to start.

That Lee 113gr known here as the "soupcan" is very accurate in everything I have shot it in. I am going to buy another and open the gascheck portion as I think it will shoot nice pb also.

Bruce, et al., My experience with the "soupcan" mirrors Jay's exactly with the exception of removing the GC shank.

troy_mclure :

Using 10 grs. of Russian Unique and the 311413 sized to .3095 with an aluminum .014" thick g/c with Wolf LR primers, I shot this 10 rd. group at 50 yards this afternoon.

Fun plinking load and very accurate. The bore in the barrel is mirror bright after shooting these loads.

I was shooting my Springfield , 1903 , .308 Win Target rifle with Lyman 48 and 17 A :

I also shot 9.0 of Russian Unique with my plain based 311410 ( not a bevel base....but a true plain base ), 5 shots @ 50 yards. A good inexpensive , fun, easy to assemble load for the 308 Win. BTW.....the round that struck low right is me not the load or the rifle.

I'll have to give that 311410 a try in the '06. It sure was a bust in my M-1 carbine!

I might as well throw in my vote for a boolit that hasn't been mentioned. The RCBS 130 SP for a fancy gas checked design. The RCBS 32-98 pistol boolit for a plinker.

The 311410 does very well in my carbine with 12.5gr of IMR4227. Any load you can hit a grapefruit with at 100yds with a carbine is a good load. Some may do better, but they aren't precision rifles.
