Is the LYMAN #358430 195grain Round Nose Plain Base an effective mold for a 358WIN build? It looks like a good bore-rider with a good flat meplat and rounded edges for smooth feeding.

I've got the new barrel for one of my Mausers coming in the mail and I'm trying to decide between this mold or LYMAN's #358315 204GR which is a Gas-checked tapered round nose as well.

I'm thinking either boolit kept at around 1800fps should be just fine for 100 yard shooting of deer. I'm primarily trying to decide if the cost of the gascheck is worth picking up the 204gr mold or that the 195gr will do the trick for the distances required.

I already own one 158GR RN and one 148gr SWC for my pistols and intend to use them as plinking loads for the kids but I would like the heavier bullet mold for my hunting purposes.

So for those with experience with either mold, please grab a chair and sit down around the woodstove and lets talk about the molds.

I have the RCBS 200 gr GCFP, If you want some of those to try, I could size and check them anywhere from .355- .360. for you.

I've not had very good accuracy in my bolt action M91 Arentine .35 Rem (Shilen barrel) with PB'd bulleta bove 1550 fps and then they had to be cast very hard. Down in the 450 - 1200 fps range most PB'd bullets shoot very well. I also could not get the Lyman 358315 to shoot very wel at all. it shot "ok" up through 1750 fps but never shot well at all and I tried it every way from Sunday. I then tried the RCBS 35-200-FN as twotrees suggests and found instant success. I shoot this bullet at 2150 fps with excellent accuracy using 37 gr of milsurp 4895 (100% loading density). For hunting I cast them of WW/lead at 50/50 and HP the nose with a Forster HP tool. They are very accurate and deadly on deer and coyote. For practice the same bullet cast of WW + 2% tin and WQ'd with the same load uses the same zeroes and does not have to be cleaned after 8 rounds or so to maintain the 1.5 moa (with a reciever sight) accuracy. I can shoot the practice load all day long without leading or any other excessive fouling (I use Javelina lube). The GC and driving bands fit the shorter neck of the .35 Rem perfectly and should also fit your .358 perfectly.

The 358430's that I have seen had a nose shaped like a hemisphere with no flat at all.
If I were you I would consider the 200 gr RCBS or the 190 gr Ranch Dog, both gas checked.

I would go with the GC mold. I have a 190 gr. for my .358 Wins. I haven't ran them over the chrony, but know they are going out over 2200fps. And, they shoot around 1/4" at 100 yards if I do my part. I'm sure they would be all you ever need for deer, and are great light recoil loads for varmint shooting.

Bruce, I am heavy into 358 rifle molds. PM when you get back and I'll send a care package.

this is the boolit I use in my 358 win
its heavier than you wanted but was designed especially for the 358 case
does a super job on deer

Bruce, of the two you mentioned; the 358315 has done much better for me. In my 336 marlin, 21grs of SR4759 will hit 1800fps and shoot little bitty groups doing it.

Twotrees,

You are a good man!

AnythonyB,

Ditto!

Larry,

That's a good looking hunk of lead!

To everyone,

So far it seems like the current advice is to use a RCBS 200gr FN and pick up a box of GCs as well.

I'll be home for leave in around 45 days and I want to try to spin that barrel on during those two weeks and try to send some boolits downrange during that time as well.

Well, I guess I'm sending a note to Midsouth tonight to have it sitting at the house by the time I get home.

Bruce, another vote for the RCBS 35-200.

Another vote for the RCBS 35-200. My accuracy is the same as it is with condom bullets (very good) using the same full house load in my .35 Remington. I just got a line on a used .358, so I may get a chance to try it there too! :D
Thanks so much for your service! I'm an old Vietnam guy, so I can appreciate all that you have sacrificed for us.

Finally got the 358 Winchester built on a Brazilian 1909 Mauser action last week and took it to the range on Monday.

First set of loads were using pistol bullets sized at .358

120gr RN
12gr Unique
mixed cases
WIN LR Primer
50 yards 2.5 inch group

158gr SWC
12gr Unique
mixed cases
WIN LR Primer
50 yards 2.0 inch group
~1400fps

I still need to set some time aside to set up a time to purchase a 200gr mold but I'm also balancing a recently purchased Columbian 1950 Mauser in 30-06 and newly purchased AR15 lower.

So far, the rifle is going to continued to be used with the 158gr mold for plinking and close in deer hunting.

Saeco shoots good in my Ruger M77 Hawkeye over 41-42 grains of IMR 4320.

I think it weighs around 260 grains, but I hollow-pointed my bullets.

I was shooting these @ 100 yards off the back of a truck bed, btw. I'm confident that a better rest would have shrunk the groups considerably.

EDIT: Picture of the loaded rounds for fun. :)

Saeco calls that the 352 and lists it weight as 245. Mine run in the 252 range.

Appreciate your service to our country. If you would some rcbs 35-200's, drop me a pm and I'll send you a couple hundred. I think the alloy is 94/3/3. They are not sized or checked. Could get them out in the next day or two.

If you want them sized and checked, with my schedule, yikes. It might be a few months.

my saeco is closer in weight to gianni's. [but i mix ww's and some soft lead and water drop]
i push it with rl-19 in the 48-50 gr area. through my hawkeye
mostly with 48.5 grs.
and size scuff it in my 358 sizer.
a bit of pure in the nose makes a deadly deer boolit that shoots just like jaxketed.

No longer have a 358, but would bet that the 190 Ranch Dog GC would be an excellent blt for it!

This is way behind the time of the original post, but I have some of the LAR45 180 FPGCs and the GB 220 FPGCs if you would like to try some.

Thank YOU and all of those in uniform past and present for your service!

So the 12gr of Unique may need to be stepped down a bit. Cleaned the rifle today and the bore brush was bringing out tiny little bits of lead (actually a lot of little flakes)

Granted this was the first 50 boolits down the bore so it should hopefully smooth out soon or I may have to break down to shoot jacketed for a bit to smooth the bore a bit.

Bruce, I also have a few rifle moulds for 35 caliber. Let me know if you want some to try. I have the 35-200 hp'd by buckshot, along with a few other styles.

Finally got back to this project today when I found a used 358315 DC mold at my local gunstore.

I cast about a 100 of the boolits this evening and will probably make some loads up in the immediate future for my 358Win Mauser.

Finally got those 100 - 358315 boolits sized, checked and lubed this evening. I also sized, checked and lubed some .358 158gr SWC GC boolits for some experimenting also. I'll try to load them up and get some time at the range this weekend for a range report.

Just saw that I'm remiss in providing a range report on this rifle and load combination. I'll try to get out there again with this rifle before the end of the year.

I just read through this thread for the first time and am curious . . . Did you accept any of the offers of getting the RCBS 35 200's?

That really is a great bullet that's worked very well for me in several 35 cal firearms from revolvers to wildcat rifles. In fact I thought so much of this bullet that I bought the NOE clone in an aluminum 5 cav. Also for the velocity range to 2000 fps I also recommend trying the SR 4759 that was mentioned.

Nope, I've never asked for any free boolits. I do own a 358315 now so I've got something to work with other than ligher pistol weight boolits.

Bruce

Well geez, it's not asking for free bullets. It's simply friendly forum folks offering to give you a chance to see if that's the bullet for you before investing in a mold of your own. Hardly charity, I've sent boolits to several folks on this forum, some bought the mold afterward and some didn't but it gave them the opportunity to try out the boolit.

Self-Reliancy is sometimes my own biggest fault. I also mail free bullets out to people when I can. Sometimes I forget that others think the same as me when it comes doing good deeds.

But in my defence, since the move from NY, I haven't shot the 358 Win rifle or worked on it either.
